This room was, at one time, the kitchen of the upstairs duplex.
It had an ell-shaped formica countertop with cabinetry above and
below. The floors have some sort of hideous linoleum over pine wood,
which was then painted with a green paint that never really stopped
being tacky to the touch.
The walls have in some places been originally textured and painted
several times, then wallpapered over, then painted, then wallpapered
again, then sponge-painted. In other places, there doesn't appear
to be any initial texture, just paint and wallpaper directly over
sheetrock.
All of this has been painstakingly scraped off.
The next step was to completely re-texture the walls, in what's called
the "Mediterranean trowel" pattern. This was actually quite fun and
somewhat zen-like!
We painted the room, in a really different and restful mauve-ish, purplish
tones. Nan and Mary Beth recommended a darker ceiling, and since they
lived in the room first, and Maret turned out so well, I guess it was
good advice!
Pergo flooring (driftwood pattern) has been installed, curtains on the windows,
all that's left is some fine-tuning of the door hardware to restore to
authentic glass-knobs and brass hardware.
